Over £11,000 raised in 2006

Graeme Munro  - Come in number 86 !!

In this year's bike run, Graeme Munro, started with number 86.  Coincidently it was 20 years ago this month in 1986 that Graeme started his accountancy practice  and rather than mark the milestone with a "corporate event", Graeme decided to donate the equivalent cost to a charitable event.  As the bike run was within 3 weeks of the anniversary (1 October) he decided to enter and ask his clients to add to his contribution by sponsoring him.  The response he received was excellent and his clients fully supported his idea of making a donation instead of spending funds on food and drink at a celebration that some clients may not be able to attend anyway!

With just about all of the money in from Graeme's clients and combined with his own donation, he has raised a staggering £2,650.  Graeme, we are speechless - thank you.

You can find more information about Graeme Munro and Company Limited here.

Phew what a scorcher

As described below, Ian Johnston wasn't able to ride in the bike run this year but joined in by walking around the deck of his ship.  We hear that not only did Ian complete the walk in temperatures up above 30 degrees, but he also raised over £400 in the process.  Well done Ian!!

The Karen Teale Bike Run 2006

The morning started off perfectly! Blue skies, sunshine and a gentle breeze.  The car parks started filling up after 8am and gradually people came to register.  By 9.50am most cyclists were gathered and raring to get going.

Shirley Lawson did a quick talk about the T-shirts on sale and also remembered Karen.

Then John Lathem talked us through the safety briefing and the pistol was fired! Off went the cyclists at 10am for the 27mile run followed by the 11mile run at 10.30am.  All returned safely at various times but all with a great sense of achievement and most found it enjoyable!! Many gathered to enjoy the BBQ, (plenty of burgers this year!) and the glorious sunshine.

At 2pm was the kiddies bike run down at the trim track which was well attended and proved to be an ideal setting for this event.  All the kids whizzed around to see how many laps they could achieve and all did really well.

There were around 300 cyclists collectively on the day and the new 11 mile route proved to be very popular. The organisers would like to thank all the cyclists, volunteer helpers, marshals, people who offered equipment and anyone else that contributed to making the 2006 Bike Run a great day.

This year the bike run went international! Phil Stratford and family completed a 35km cycle run around Melbourne

And we think (awaiting confirmation) Ian Johnston did a 20 mile walk around the deck of the RFA Wave Ruler, a Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker upon which he is currently serving in the Caribbean.

The Beneficiaries for 2006

Marie Curie Nurses

We make it possible for people to live to the very last moment – at home, rather than go into hospital.

Every minute of every day, someone is being cared for by a Marie Curie Nurse or Healthcare Assistant.

Working in communities across the UK – from remote Scottish islands through villages and towns to our biggest cities – Marie Curie Nurses now care for around half of all cancer patients who die at home.

The service is always free of charge to patients and carers and is available through your District Nurse of GP

Marie Curie Nurses generally work at night – spending eight or nine hours in the patient’s home - allowing the carers to rest knowing their loved-one is in safe hands.

In addition to providing care for the patient, Marie Curie Nurses are also there to support the carers at what can be an emotional and stressful time.

The presence of a Marie Curie Nurse in the home can often make the difference between the patient being able to remain at home and being admitted to a hospital.

Marie Curie Nurses are also available during the day time and early evenings.

Alford Junior Golf Section

The Alford Golf Club are currently developing their Practise Area and Junior Coaching facilities at the Club.  They have received a grant for this development and as well as a Putting Green, they are to build a large 2/3 hole green at the foot of the Practise Area which will include Bunkers etc.

One of their priorities is to purchase a Explanar Junior Golf Training System and accompanying mats.  The Training System promotes the ideal movements required for the golf swing which improves the child's golf game.

The KT Bike Run will donate funds from the 2006 Bike Run to enable them to purchase the Swing Trainer and Mats.

Tullynessle & Forbes Public Hall

Tullynessle and Forbes Public Hall serves a wide area including the Howe of Alford, Donside and well beyond, drawing people from this wide area to events within it.  It sees increasing use by families and various community groups, particularly by older people.

The hall was built at a time of lower building standards and is structurally deteriorating in many ways and needs to be redeveloped to meet changed community needs.

The Big Lottery Fund has awarded the Association a grant of £227,768.  However the offer from the Lottery will only remain open for up 12 months and is dependent on the necessary balance of £150,000 being raised by the Committee.
